1st Annual Detroit Optimist Society "Best of Bars" Competition

Congratulations to Alex Kirles and Beaux Kerin for for making it in to the finals of the "Best of Bars" competition being held at Cafe 78 on Tuesday night.  The competition is being sponsored by Long Road Distillers in Grand Rapids and will feature some of the best bartenders from The Detroit Optimist Society properties (The Sugar House, Wright & Co, The Peterboro, Honest Johns, and Cafe 78).  Five finalists will be competing in this live event open to the public for a chance at bragging rights, $1000, and a trip to Kentucky!

There will be a happy hour from 5-7pm with a menu of cocktails featuring the Long Road spirits.  The guys from Long Road will be on hand to talk about their work and taste through samples of their products.  At 7pm the competition will begin and each finalist will be making free samples of their cocktail for the crowd to vote on.  So come by and support your favorite bartenders and local Michigan made spirits producers!

Whiskey Wednesday: Buffalo Trace Antique Collection Fall Release

Whiskey Wednesday: Buffalo Trace Antique Collection Fall Release

Although the bottles themselves have yet to hit the shelf, Buffalo Trace has just released the breakdown of it's signature lineup to be released in the coming months.  Breaking Bourbon has put together a (Thomas?) handy guide to give you an idea of what to expect when you are out hunting this fall.  Good news for fans of wheated bourbon is the huge increase in one of the most coveted bottles, William Larue Weller!  Bad news for fans of aged ryes is the dismal number of Sazerac 18 bottles to be had.

These bottles are notoriously hard to track down here in Michigan, so be on the look out for some of the fall's other special releases:  Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, the Pappy Van Winkle lineup, and of course Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch!  The 2016 Four Roses Limited Edition has already been released, marking new Master Distiller Brent Elliot's first premium pick.  You can try it, along with previous years Limited Edition Single Barrel selections here at Sugar House on Saturday, September 24th at noon.  Tickets for this Sugar House Drinking Team event can be purchased here.

Sugar House says Aloha to Summer 16

Sugar House says Aloha to Summer 16

Summer 16 saw the introduction of one of our favorite menu's to date:  The Sugar House Islands Tiki menu.  As the summer sizzles to an end, we knew we had to go out in style.  Bidding farewell to the Sugar Islands with a patio pig roast courtesy of Chef Brion at The Peterboro.  Saying sayonara with a soundtrack laid down by Vince Patricola.  A final nod kicking back plenty of Jamaica's next killer rum(fire) courtesy of Nicholas Feris of the Rum Collective.  Softening the sadness of summer slipping away, cocktails featuring some of Kentucky's best bourbons.  And for those who chose to defiantly put up a heroic last stand, A MELLOW CORN ICE LUGE!

Take a look at the photo gallery from the party and get ready for our 5th Anniversary Party coming up on Sunday, October 9th!

Sugar House Takes Over The Violet Hour

Sugar House Takes Over The Violet Hour

The Sugar House has been invited to travel to Chicago to do a bar take-over at The Violet Hour!  The bar will be closed on Monday, September 19th and the whole team will be going to ChiTown to deliver a definitive Detroit drinking experience to thirsty Chicagoans.  The Violet Hour is one of the  original craft cocktail bars in the country and was recently named in Esquire magazine as a hall of fame bar.  Prior to opening the Sugar House, Dave lived in Chicago and was a regular at The Violet Hour (yes, he was "that guy" at the bar asking all the annoying questions lol).  He credits the bar program there with so much of the inspiration for The Sugar House, so it's especially exciting to showcase his work over the last 5 years.  Dave and Jason will be traveling to Chicago next week to make the initial preparations so expect some more exciting news about the trip!
