I got me some Gran Classico from DrinkUpNy… Here’s what it says on the bottle:
“Gran Classico Bitter is based on the original Italian Bitter of Turin recipe dating from 1864. This classic apertif is an infusion of numerous herbs and roots including wormwood, gentian, bitter orange peel, rhubarb, and other aromatic plants. Complex, refreshingly bitter-sweet with a finish that lingers like the last sentence of a cherished novel.”
Well, I don’t know about that “cherished novel” crap, but I will say it tastes fucking killer. Apparently this is the same formula that Campari is based on, but this doesn’t have the intense red coloring added. Which is cool, if you’re a pussy.
Naturally Wifey and I did a blind taste test… eyes closed I could tell the GC from the Campari. It smells sweeter with a bit of honey… I could also tell it was the hotter of the two. GC comes in at about 28%, while the Camapri is 24% abv. On the tongue, the GC is immediately a bit sweeter, again with notes of honey among the bitter orange, with a nice peppery finish, and a decent amount of bitterness. Overall a bit more chaotic than the Campari, but very similar, and very very good.
Making a Negroni with it in a few. Expecting great results.
